ThyroShield® Product Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ThyroShield® Potassium Iodide Oral Solution Receives FDA Approval

Fenton, St. Louis County, Missouri (Jan. 24, 2005) - Fleming & Company, Pharmaceuticals announced today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of ThyroShield® Potassium Iodide Oral Solution. ThyroShield® is a thyroid blocking medicine to be used in a radiation emergency only.

"Fleming is very proud to have developed this product. It fills a serious gap in thyroid protection from radiation exposure, especially for infants and children. ThyroShield is the only FDA approved liquid potassium iodide product indicated for thyroid protection in a radiation emergency," said Tom Johnson, President of Fleming & Company. "Direct dosing to infants and young children is very important because they are most at risk in the event of exposure to radioactive iodine."

ThyroShield® may be used by any member of a family to block the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine, when taken within hours of exposure. If not protected, exposure may eventually cause diseases of the thyroid, including cancer. More information on the use of potassium iodide in a radiation emergency can be found on the FDA's web site at www.fda.gov/cder/drugprepare/default.htm. ThyroShield® is not a general protective agent.

Prior to the FDA approval of ThyroShield®, all of the potassium iodide products for use in a nuclear emergency were in the form of tablets. This presents dosing and compliance issues, especially for young children and infants. The tablets must be broken into smaller doses and then mixed with a liquid before it may be administered to young children and infants.

"ThyroShield® is a liquid that is administered orally using a measured dropper. This eliminates the need to estimate dosing and mixing. The black raspberry flavor is very palatable to children as well. We hope no one will ever have to use this product, but if they do, it will be easy and fast for any member of the family to have thyroid protection," Johnson noted.

ThyroShield® Potassium Iodide Oral Solution is available without a prescription as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug product, but it is to be used only in the event of a radiation emergency. ThyroShield® may be of particular benefit to families who live within a 20 mile radius of a nuclear power plant. More information on the use of potassium iodide by people living near a nuclear power facility can be found on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission web site at www.nrc.gov/what-we-do/emerg-preparedness/protect-public/potassium-iodide-use.html. ThyroShield® should be available for purchase by consumers, through local retail outlets or by asking their pharmacist to order it.
